The University of Ghana is a public research university located in Legon, a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana. It was established in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, a constituent college of the University of London. The establishment of the university was the culmination of years of effort by Ghanaians who wanted to have their own national university. The University College started with three faculties: Arts, Science, and Medicine, and admitted its first students in 1948. In 1961, the University College gained full university status and became the University of Ghana. Over the years, the university has grown to become a major institution of higher education, with multiple campuses across the country, and a student population of over 40,000. The University has produced many notable alumni, including heads of state, government officials, academics, and business leaders. It is also known for its research excellence in areas such as agriculture, health, social sciences, and humanities. Today, the University of Ghana remains committed to its mission of providing excellent education and research opportunities to its students, and contributing to the development of Ghana and Africa as a whole.
