CORAF has just announced the 2023 Food System Resilience Scholarship for African Students for international students who are eager to explore a special field for the 2023/2024 academic year.

This opportunity is designed for postgraduate students and offers 8 prestigious PhD scholarships with over US$1 billion in funding, the FSRP is a regional investment program that aims to strengthen the food system in West Africa. By investing in three key thematic areas, the program seeks to promote digital advisory services for the prevention and management of agricultural and food crises, enhance the sustainability and resilience of the food system’s productive base, and foster market integration and trade through the development of regional staple food value chains. Led by three of the most respected regional institutions – AGRHYMET, CORAF, and ECOWAS – this program promises to deliver coordinated and sustainable results that will benefit the entire region. CORAF (The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development) was established in 1987 as a specialized agency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with the aim of promoting agricultural research and development in West and Central Africa. Since then, CORAF has become a leading organization in agricultural research and development, with a focus on improving food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods in the region. CORAF has also been instrumental in promoting regional cooperation and partnerships among stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for CORAF 2023 Food System Resilience Scholarship for African Students:

  • Be a national of one of the CORAF member countries;
  • Be no more than 40 years old;
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Have a Master’s degree in research related to the chosen field and theme;
  • Have already identified a thesis supervisor;
  • Have a demonstrated capacity for applied research, a willingness to learn and think across disciplines and professions;
  • Have a demonstrated interest in agricultural research for development;
  • Ability to speak and write French or English fluently; a good working knowledge of the other language would be an asset;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Application Procedure for CORAF 2023 Food System Resilience Scholarship for African Students (How to apply);

An Interested applicant who wants to apply for CORAF 2023 Food System Resilience Scholarship for African Students, must submit their application by email to recrutement.etudiants@coraf.org with a copy to n.lamien@coraf.org, on or before May 17, 2023. The subject line of the email should clearly state “Doctoral Program – CORAF 2023”. Shortlisted students will be interviewed online. Results will be announced in July with a likely start date of September 2023.

The documents below are to be submitted:

  • A letter of motivation demonstrating the applicant’s suitability and motivation and specifying his/her availability;
  • Diplomas and transcripts (Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees);
  • A curriculum vitae (Maximum 5 pages);
  • Two letters of recommendation from supervisors with their addresses;
  • A letter of commitment from each identified supervisor (university and research center)
  • A budgeted thesis research proposal on one of the research topics covering one of CORAF’s priority areas (proposals attached). The research proposal must specify the doctoral school or university of registration, and the name, and full address of the supervisors (Co-Directors of the thesis).
