Open to organizations across Africa, the U.S.-West Africa Tech Challenge 2024 seeks winning solutions that will benefit Coastal West African countries. The West Africa Tech Challenge 2024, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Global Engagement Center, is coming up! Collaborating with the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan, the Cote d’Ivoire Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, the United Nations Development Programme, She Code Africa, Impact Hub Abidjan, and Becera, the challenge aims to select three winning organizations. These winners will be awarded a total funding of $250,000 USD.

Save the date for the challenge, happening in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on September 27-28, 2023. The event will consist of two parts: a demo day featuring selected technologists, followed by engaging panels and discussions. These discussions will bring together technologists, government officials, civil society, academia, and media to share knowledge, and experiences, and explore cooperation opportunities in addressing the challenges at hand.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for West Africa Tech Challenge 2024:

  • African Media and Information Literacy Organization (AMILO): A pan-African organization that promotes media and information literacy to counter disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa.
  • Center for Digital Resilience (CDR): A research and advocacy organization focused on developing innovative strategies to expose and counter disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism across Africa.
  • Digital Rights Africa (DRA): An organization working to protect digital rights and combat online disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa through policy advocacy and capacity-building initiatives.
  • African Network for Countering Disinformation (ANCD): A network of organizations across Africa dedicated to sharing best practices, conducting research, and developing innovative solutions to counter disinformation and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa.
  • Media Monitoring Africa (MMA): A non-profit organization that promotes media accountability and monitors disinformation and propaganda in Coastal West Africa, aiming to enhance media literacy and citizen engagement.
  • West African Center for Counter-Extremism (WACCE): An organization focused on research, training, and community engagement to counter violent extremism in Coastal West Africa, with a particular emphasis on understanding and countering online propaganda.
  • Digital Defenders Partnership (DDP): A collaborative initiative that supports organizations across Africa working to protect human rights online, including countering disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa.
  • African Media Initiative (AMI): A continental organization that supports the development of a vibrant and professional media sector in Africa, with efforts to combat disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa through training and capacity-building programs.
  • Center for Democracy and Development (CDD): A policy advocacy organization working to strengthen democratic governance in Africa, specifically focusing on countering disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa.
  • Digital Awareness Foundation (DAF): An organization that raises awareness about digital threats and provides educational resources to enhance digital literacy and counter disinformation, propaganda, and violent extremism in Coastal West Africa.
