The African Languages and Translation Program at the Africa Institute is currently welcoming submissions for the fourth installment of its Global Africa Translation Fellowship in 2024. Interested scholars are encouraged to submit their applications to be considered for this invaluable opportunity to contribute to the advancement of African literary scholarship.

This prestigious fellowship offers scholars a grant of $5,000 to support their translation projects. The initiative is designed to foster greater engagement with African literature and promote the dissemination of translated works from the continent’s diverse literary traditions. The Africa Institute has announced a non-residential fellowship opportunity for scholars hailing from the Global South. The fellowship aims to enable the translation of literary texts from the African continent and its diaspora into either English or Arabic, in order to make them accessible to a wider readership beyond Africa. The fellowship offers grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for approved projects that can involve re-translations of classical works, previously untranslated materials, poetry, prose, and/or critical theory collections. The fellowship can be utilized for either a project that has already been completed or one that can be finished within the timeframe of the grant. This initiative is designed to promote the dissemination of African literature and encourage greater engagement with the continent’s diverse literary traditions.

The Africa Institute’s Global Africa Translation Fellowship was established to promote the translation of African literature into English or Arabic and to make it accessible to a wider readership beyond Africa. The fellowship provides a grant of $5,000 to scholars from the Global South to translate texts from the African continent and its diaspora. The fellowship program has been running since at least 2021 and is now accepting applications for its fourth cohort in 2024.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for The Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024:

  • Applicants must have a strong background in translation or relevant literary studies, as well as a demonstrated interest in African literature and culture.
  • Applicants may also need to provide a detailed proposal outlining their project, including the works they plan to translate and their methodology.
  • Applicants must have the quality and feasibility of the project proposal, and its potential contribution to the advancement of African literary scholarship.

Application Procedure for The Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024 (How to apply);

An interested applicant who wants to apply for The Africa Institute Global Africa Translation Fellowship 2024, should submit the following below:

  • A two-page CV/resume including institutional affiliation, educational qualifications, including highest degree received, and key publications/works produced
  • A two-page narrative explaining the translation to be undertaken during the fellowship period, an explanation of the importance of the work, a justification for a re-translation, if applicable, and proposed dates of completion. The project may be a work-in-progress or a new project that fits within the timeframe of the grant.
  • A 4–5-page (double-spaced) sample of the original text(s) and translation.
    An explanation of the work’s copyright status: If the work is not in the public domain, please include a copy of the copyright notice from the original text, and a letter from the copyright holder stating that
  • English language rights to the work are available.
  • All submitted applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing a statement, sample, copyright status (if applicable), and CV in that order.

NOTE PLEASE: Label the file with the applicant’s name as LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf and include the same name in the subject line of the email (LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME application). Attach the PDF to the email and send it to translation@theafricainstitute.org.
