The 2023 Megatrends Afrika Fellowships for African Researchers is now accepting applications from interested students who wish to develop their research skills at the respective institutes in Berlin, Bonn or Kiel.

The Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 is a program designed for PhD African researchers, which spans across three days. The program focuses on three core research themes: the changing nature of conflict and the actors involved in violence, the impact of megatrends on autocratisation and democratization, and the shift of global power and the emergence of multipolarity. The fellowship will run for a period of three months, from May 15th to November 30th, 2023, on a full-time basis. During this time, fellows are required to reside in either Berlin, Bonn, or Kiel, where the associated institute is located. Fellows will receive a monthly grant of €2,800, as well as an economy fare return trip from their home country to Germany. The honorarium at IDOS will be based on the IDOS fee chart.

The Megatrends Afrika Fellowships is a relatively new program that was established to support African researchers in developing their research skills and knowledge. The program was launched in 2020 and is focused on three core research themes: the changing nature of conflict and the actors involved in violence, the impact of megatrends on autocratisation and democratization, and the shift of global power and the emergence of multipolarity. The fellowship is run by the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and is open to African researchers who are interested in advancing their careers and contributing to the understanding of African issues. The program has gained recognition and has attracted many applicants since its inception.

In order to be eligible for 2023 Megatrends Afrika Fellowships for African Researchers, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must have a PhD in politics, economics, social sciences, geography, international relations, or other relevant regional sciences.
  • Applicants must be originally from an African country.
  • Applicants must have a history of scholarly work and experience in areas pertinent to the MTA project.

Application Procedure for 2023 Megatrends Afrika Fellowships for African Researchers (How to apply);

For interested applicant who wants to apply for 2023 Megatrends Afrika Fellowships for African Researchers, should submit your application to Megatrends-Afrika@swp-berlin.org before the deadline. Incomplete applications and those received after the deadline will not be considered.

  • Applicants must submit a single PDF document which should include a one-page letter of motivation, an academic CV (including a list of published works, with two samples of recent publications), copies of relevant academic transcripts and/or diplomas (no translations required) and a concept note describing the proposed project.
  • The concept note should not exceed 2,000 words and include an exploration of the project/research topic, relevant goals, and the academic and policy implications of the project. Additionally, the concept should describe the theoretical and methodological approaches the fellow intends to use.
  • The project should be planned such that the publication will be completed by the end of the fellowship.
