The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program serves to nurture young academics from Africa faster, by linking them to international scholars networks. This is acknowledged by the African Presidential program which notes that the University of Michigan is committed to the support of international postgraduate research as well as education and the provision of assistance to cultivate future scholars in Africa.

Requirements and eligibility criteria;
- Be an early career faculty member who has taught in the higher education system for less than ten years, and who is presently teaching in a college or university in Africa.
- Be employed in an ongoing position at a university or college in Africa.
- Be able to demonstrate support from a home institution with a letter of recommendation from the head of department, dean, or vice chancellor.
- Be able to remain in residence for five months.

Application Procedures;
To apply, applicants from Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia can submit their applications directly. Applicants from other countries need to be nominated by a University of Michigan faculty member who knows their work.
The nominating faculty member must:
- Fill out an online nomination form (requires U-M login).
- Upload a letter of endorsement, confirming their commitment to mentor the applicant during the residency, including regular meetings and, if possible, providing office space.
- Once the nomination form and letter are submitted, the nominated candidate will receive a link to the application portal via email.
Applicants are required to:
- Complete the online application form.
- Upload a curriculum vitae.
- Upload a research proposal (maximum of five pages).
- Provide contact details for a department head, dean, or vice chancellor at their home institution who will provide a letter of support.
