The South African university was shaped by colonialism and apartheid, which led to the establishment of institutions serving European interests and segregating education. Apartheid policies denied black students a quality education and spurred campus activism. Post-apartheid, universities transformed, focusing on inclusivity and equal access. Challenges included rapid enrollment growth, student protests for free education, and research contributions across disciplines. South African universities continue to evolve, striving for inclusivity, addressing disparities, and fostering research in a diverse society.
