Government of Canada Student Research Awards 2024
Suitably qualified students are encouraged to apply for the Government of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Awards offered by the Government of Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
The USRA program supports over 3,000 undergraduate students annually, fostering a passion for research and helping you develop your potential for a career in health, natural sciences, and engineering, or social sciences and humanities.

Requirements and Eligibility Criteria Government of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Awards
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) as of the application deadline.
- Must be registered in a bachelor’s degree program at an eligible institution by the application deadline.
- Must have a satisfactory cumulative average (normally at least B-; check with your institution).
- Cannot be currently enrolled in an undergraduate professional degree program in the health sciences (e.g., MD, DDS, BScN) (does not apply for CIHR USRAs).
- Cannot be currently or previously registered in a graduate program in the same field of study.
- Cannot have completed all degree requirements.
Benefits
- Value: USRAs are valued at $6,000, with the host institution required to supplement the award.
- The award lasts 14 to 16 weeks on a full-time basis.
- Activities during the USRA tenure are governed by agreements with the host institution, including employment agreements if applicable.
- The agency’s contribution is paid directly to the host institution and included in the funds you receive.

To create or access an application, log in to the online system. Make sure to read the instructions before completing and submitting your application.
- Submit your USRA application to the Canadian institution where you want to hold the award through NSERC’s online system.
- Form 202, Part I: Application for an Undergraduate Student Research Award (to be completed by the applicant)
- Form 202, Part II: Application for an Undergraduate Student Research Award (to be completed by the proposed research supervisor)
