Stellenbosch Institute for Advance Study (STIAS) is pleased to welcome applications from suitably qualified applicants to apply for the STIAS Fellowship and Research Programme 2024 which is led by STIAS and self-generated by applicants.
STIAS is a fully independent institute that encourages innovative approaches to science and research within a world context but is drawn from Africa and focuses on creating new ideas which will help African society in particular.

Requirements and Eligibility STIAS Fellowship and Research Programme 2024;
- Applicants who are artists-in-residence and short-term Fellows drawn from the sphere of public commentary and opinion-making.
- A limited number of applications from young scholars who have completed at least one postdoctoral fellowship (preferably more than one) will also be considered annually.
- Apart from candidates who apply within the framework of an agreement with the Volkswagen Foundation, STIAS does not consider postdoctoral applications.
- Level: Does the proposed research project demonstrate excellence at the highest academic level?
- Innovation: Does the project introduce new perspectives or methodologies? Will it potentially generate new insights and knowledge?
- Interdisciplinarity: To what extent does the project integrate and contribute to multiple disciplines? Will it foster interdisciplinary interactions during the residency?
- Relevance: Is the project suitable for an institute focused on advanced study? Does it hold relevance for South Africa and Africa?
- Feasibility: How well-developed is the methodology and research design? Is the research plan realistic and achievable? Does the applicant possess the necessary skills and resources to successfully carry out the project?

Application Procedures for STIAS Fellowship and Research Programme 2024 (How to apply);
The STIAS fellowship, please prepare and submit the following documents:
- Covering Letter: Introduce yourself and express your interest in the fellowship.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Provide a comprehensive overview of your academic and professional background.
- List of Publications: Include a list of your published works, which can also be part of your CV.
- Recent Articles: Submit one or two recent articles that showcase your research or relate to your proposed project.
- Project Proposal: Include a project title and a detailed description (2-4 pages) outlining your planned research and expected outcomes.
- Project Summary: Provide a brief (maximum 200 words) summary of your proposed project that is accessible to readers outside your specific discipline. This summary will be posted on the STIAS website.
- Fellowship Details: Indicate the length of fellowship you are applying for, and specify preferred and alternative dates for your residency at STIAS.
- Motivation: Briefly explain how you learned about the STIAS program and why you have chosen STIAS for your fellowship.

- Preferred Method: Email all documentation in PDF format to gudrun@sun.ac.za.
- Alternative Method: Mail hard copies to Ms Gudrun Schirge, STIAS Senior Programme Administrator, Private Bag X1, Matieland 7602, South Africa.
- Ensure all documents are complete and submitted according to the specified format and method.
