The Royal Holloway University of London is a public research university located in Egham, Surrey, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway, a philanthropist who had made his fortune selling patent medicines. Holloway’s vision was to establish a college for women, and in 1886, the college became one of the first institutions in the UK to admit women to study for University of London degrees. In 1985, Royal Holloway merged with Bedford College, another historic women’s college in London, and became a mixed college, admitting both men and women. Today, the university is recognized as one of the leading research institutions in the UK, with a strong reputation in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as in science and engineering.
