2024 Astronomy in Africa Scholarships for African Students
Suitably qualified African Students who are looking to pursue a masters degree programme in South African university specializing in astrophysics or astronomy are invited to submit application for the 2024 Astronomy in Africa Scholarships that is fully funded to the 32nd General Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Astronomy in Africa Scholarships seeks to award high impact Master’s scholarships to eligible African students that aligns with the hosting of the 32nd General Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa hosted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The scholarships will allow outstanding applicants to undertake a two-year Master of Science (MSc) degree in any reputable university in South Africa starting in 2023.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is a non governmental organisation with the objective of advancing astronomy in all aspects, including promoting astronomical research, outreach, education, and development through global cooperation. The organisation was founded in 1919 and is based in Paris, France. Among the key activities of the IAU is serving as a forum for scientific conferences. It sponsors nine annual symposia and holds a triennial General Assembly that sets policy and includes various scientific meetings and for the first time in over 100 years history of the organisation that the General Assembly will be held in Africa which provides a prime opportunity to showcase the cutting-edge research infrastructure and excellent talent in the science area on the continent.. The organisation is best known for being the leading authority in assigning official names and designations to astronomical objects, and for setting uniform definitions for astronomical principles. It also coordinates with national and international partners, such as UNESCO, to fulfill its mission.

Eligibility for the 2024 Astronomy in Africa Scholarships for African Students:
- Applicants from any African country are eligible to apply for the scholarships.
- Applicants must be eligible to register for a masters degree at a South African university specializing in astrophysics/astronomy.
- Applicants must have liaised with potential supervisors from recognized South African universities.
- Potential supervisors must provide an accompanying letter of support which includes a brief statement of the proposed research project for the applicant.

- A single return air ticket will be covered and the cost of visas for study will be covered by the GA2024 NOC.

- Upload an updated CV of maximum 2 pages
- Recent academic transcripts and a scan copy of undergraduate degree certificate.
- Letter of support from applicants potential supervisor.
