Stellenbosch University in South Africa is pleased to make open the application submission from suitably qualified African students who wish to pursue a masters or PhD degree programme at the university to apply for the “Turning the Tide” Scholarships 2023 worth about R357 500.00.
The “Turning the Tide” Scholarships is pleased to announce, in partnership with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a limited number of full-time Masters scholarships or PhD scholarships for African students who want to study at the university. Scholarships are available in all the disciplines that form part of applicant’s Faculty but restricted to research topics that fall within one of the following themes below:
- African Cultural Studies
- The Anthropocene and Ecocriticism
- Identity, Gender and/or Queer Studies
Stellenbosch University is a public research university situated in Stellenbosch, a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The university is considered to be the oldest university in the country. The university is designed for students with a strong mathematical and computational background. It will equip students with the fundamentals of ML and AI, plus a suite of sophisticated techniques and concepts at the research forefront of these fields.

Eligibility for the “Turning the Tide” Scholarships 2023 for African Students at Stellenbosch University in South Africa:
- Applicants should have obtained a first-class distinction (75% and above), in the final year of their previous completed degree.
- Applicants are required to provide a sample of their writing with their application: MA thesis for PhD applicants,
Honors research essay for MA applicants and any published academic articles related to applicant’s application - Applicants must not be older than 30 years of age to apply for a Masters scholarship and not older than 35 years of age to apply for a PhD scholarship at the time of application.
- Applicants have to be able to commence studies in February 2023 (subject to possible COVID-19 related delays).
- Applicants must apply to study at Stellenbosch University in addition to this scholarship application. Applicants are not required to be registered or to have a supervisor. They should, however, inform themselves regarding the availability of suitable supervisors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in their particular field of research, before submitting an application.
