Suitable and interested applicants are encouraged to apply for the UNESCO Learning City Award 2024 which promotes quality education and good practice. The program promotes high educational standards.

The UNESCO Learning City Award program is mostly open to five UNESCO GNLC member cities that progress in learning development by using the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities guideline document. The UNESCO GNLC member cities are only eligible and valid to apply for one award cycle of the program. Past awardees will not be eligible for the award for six years following the receipt of a UNESCO Learning City Award.

Requirements and eligibility criteria UNESCO Learning City Award 2024

  • Open to all UNESCO GNLC member cities with more than 12 months of membership in the network.
  • Past awardees will not be eligible for the award for six years following the receipt of a UNESCO Learning City Award.
  • Cities that received the award in 2019 and 2021, as well as those that joined the network in 2024, are ineligible for this cycle.
  • Advances in stakeholder coordination and partnerships.
  • Progress in mobilizing and utilizing resources effectively.
  • Progress in monitoring and evaluating learning city development.
  • Advances to ensure learning is accessible to all citizens.
  • Advances to foster a culture of lifelong learning.
  • Advancement of innovative practices within the learning city.
  • Contributions to activities of the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

Application Procedures for UNESCO Learning City Award 2024 (How to apply);

To apply for the award, cities need to:

  • Fill out the award application form (available in PDF or Word format) and include any extra materials like articles or videos to support their application.
  • Make sure the mayor of the city signs the application form.
  • Sign the consent form.
  • Send the completed application to their country’s National Commission for UNESCO.
  • Each National Commission for UNESCO can nominate a maximum of two cities for the award.
