WHOI Summer Student Fellowship 2024 for Undergraduate Students
The WHOI Summer Student Fellowship for Undergraduate Students in 2024 is currently open for those students who want to apply.
Summer Student Fellowships are granted to undergraduates finishing their third year at colleges or universities before the fellowship starts. Those graduating before the fellowship begins cannot apply. The program targets students in their final summer of undergraduate studies.
Candidates from various science and engineering fields—such as biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, oceanography, and marine policy—are welcome to apply. Having at least a tentative interest in ocean sciences, oceanographic engineering, or marine policy is required for eligibility.

Fellowship Summary:

Fellowship Worth:
- Stipend: Receive a weekly stipend of $650 throughout the ten- to twelve-week program duration (based on the 2021 amount).
- Travel: An allowance of $700 is provided for round-trip travel to Woods Hole.
- Housing: Shared-room accommodation with two single beds per room in a shared unit.
- Visa Assistance: International students will be assisted in obtaining the necessary J-1 Visa paperwork for the fellowship.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for WHOI Summer Student Fellowship 2024 for Undergraduate Students:
- Open to all international students, regardless of nationality.
- Specifically available for third-year undergraduate students.
- Students graduating before the fellowship starts cannot apply.
- Students in a three-year Bachelor’s Degree Program (e.g., UK programs) must be in their second year.
- Those in a five-year combined Bachelor/Master’s Degree Program should be in the program’s third year.

Application Procedure for WHOI Summer Student Fellowship 2024 for Undergraduate Students (How to apply);
Interested applicants should submit the following;
- CV/Resume: Show your education and work experience.
- Unofficial Transcript: A PDF showing your academic records. An official transcript will be needed if you get the Summer Student Fellowship.
- Two (or up to three) Letters of Recommendation: From professors or individuals familiar with your academic background.
- Research Statement (Short Essays within Application):
- Benefit of Research at WHOI: Explain how a summer at WHOI would help your education and career goals (up to 250 words).
- Qualities and Contributions: Describe qualities and characteristics you bring from life experiences, jobs, or other activities that would benefit the program (up to 200 words).
- Previous Research or Problem-solving Experience: Share an experience from classwork, a job, or an internship where you applied learned skills or knowledge to solve a problem (up to 200 words).
- Interest in Marine Research: Discuss your interest in marine research, mentioning specific areas or labs at WHOI, and why they appeal to you (up to 200 words).
Optional Information: If there’s anything else you’d like to share about yourself (up to 200 words). - These documents and essay responses will help evaluate your qualifications and suitability for the summer research program at WHOI.
