It is important to note that while the program covers the cost of the fellow’s monthly allowance, round-trip economy class airfare, and overseas travel insurance, it does not handle immigration procedures, accommodation expenses for family members or companions, or airline tickets for anyone other than the selected applicant. Successful applicants can look forward to a monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 to cover their research activities and living expenses, as well as an additional JPY 120,000 to cover initial living costs. The MIF also offers a study tour to provide further insights into Japan. Since its establishment in 1985, the foundation has supported more than 800 researchers from 85 different countries, promoting international scientific cooperation.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for the 2023 MATSUMAE International Foundation Research Fellowship Program:

Applicants must obtain an invitation (acceptance) letter from a host institution in Japan prior to application.
Applicants must hold Ph.D. (Doctoral degree).
Applicants must be at the age of 49 years old or younger at the time of application.
Applicants must have sufficient English or Japanese language ability.
Applicants should not have past or current experiences of staying in Japan (other than short-term stays such as for sightseeing or conferences)
Applicants must have an occupation in their home countries, return there upon completing their fellowship tenure, and should contribute to the development of their own country
