2023 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation recognize people and groups who work to protect important cultural heritage sites in the region. These awards encourage property owners to undertake conservation projects in their communities, either on their own or with the help of others.

Since 2000, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation program has recognized 278 projects from 27 countries in the region. These projects are acknowledged for their understanding of their sites, technical accomplishments, and positive impacts on society, the economy, and the environment. The program promotes dialogue about cultural heritage and its importance and highlights how it relates to the well-being of cities, societies, and the environment.

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation will announce the winners in November 2023. There are five levels of achievement: Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, Award of Merit, Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts, and Special Recognition for Sustainable Development. The Award of Excellence is the highest recognition, given to projects that exhibit outstanding achievement and have a significant impact. The Award of Distinction is given to projects with exceptional accomplishments that have a considerable influence. The Award of Merit is given to projects that show exceptional performance. The Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts is for newly constructed projects with exceptional designs that are well-integrated with historical contexts. The Special Recognition for Sustainable Development is a new addition that acknowledges projects with notable accomplishments in all criteria and the potential to make an impact on sustainable development.
